The Way to Get Upgraded on Flights – Domestic and International

Unless you intend to pay for the privilege to get upgraded on flights, there isn’t any sure-fire method to get it done.  There are upgrades that do become available, but there will always be countless more candidates for those upgraded seats.  For all those travelers who suppose upgrades are at the discretion of the flight attendant, their rules of conduct explicitly state that permission needs to be approved from the supervisor on the ground or if an urgent situation from the captain or the flight attendant is subject to immediate release.

Though you will discover no ways to ensure to get upgraded on flights, there are some tips that may boost your odds:

1.    Be smartly attired.  That is, business suit or minimally business casual for guys, and dress/suit for females.  You must appear like you paid the extra money for first class to fit in with those that actually did.

2.    Travel alone.  Traveling with children is in effect an automatic disqualifier.

3.    Always be keen to move if requested.  The attendant might not tell you where you are moving to, so if you refuse, they’ll simply ask someone else.

4.    Be extra courteous.  If you go out of your way to do something nice for somebody, the airline personnel are going to be more apt to thank you in a way they can.  Conversely, being loud-mouthed or aggressive will probably remove your chances.  I know there are cases where I’m mistaken, but it seems the days of getting anything through intimidation are basically over.  Also, don’t automatically expect an upgrade because your flight was delayed or canceled, as everyone is in a similar situation as you. To have a greater chance to get upgraded on flights at most be assertive, but patience is even better.

5.    Try to get a designation of Other Significant Information (OSI) on your ticket.  When you book through a travel agent, or directly with the airlines it is possible when you’ve got a legitimate cause to have your reservation marked with a note.  When you in any fashion have the ability to bring in increased income to the airline, such as having business travelers as employees, or being a travel agent or travel writer, it could be worth mentioning as it wouldn’t hurt your odds to get upgraded on flights.

6.    Volunteer to get bumped from an overbooked flight to get upgraded on flights.  I’ve done this, and you usually obtain a complimentary flight for use within a year.  However, if they do not necessitate that you get bumped, they may say “thank you” with a free upgrade.

Obviously you’ll find no guarantees that any of your kindness or dressing to the nines will move you out of your cramped center seat.  Doing what is recommended above could only advance your chances.  But there is a solution to insure your chances to get upgraded on flights both domestic and international, and that is through the use of frequent flier miles.  Even for the individual that doesn’t fly that often, if you select one airline and stick to it you could possibly build up an adequate amount for upgrades.  Only don’t use them on a one-hour trip, but for an extended flight where you will get the greater benefit.  We’ve used them to upgrade to first class on trips to Hawaii, and it improves the time in the air immensely.
